Loudness and CALM Act Compliance Workshop - A Great Success!
Dale Pro Audio and Dolby Labs proudly hosted an afternoon workshop Wednesday March 13th, 2013 at the Dolby New York City Offices on how the requirements, standards, and issues associated with the CALM Act are best being addressed. In the audience were facility owners, broadcast and post-production engineers, mixers, sound designers, and other professionals looking for insights and answers into Loudness and how to comply with the CALM Act.
Jim Starzynski of NBC Universal, one of the original authors of the ATSC’s recommended practices presented a terrific overview on the issues and thoughts behind A/85 and his experience on the best ways to address loudness measurement and correction.
The workshop also featured talks from experts from some o
f the leading manufacturers of products designed to help meet the loudness requirements of the CALM act. Representatives from Junger, RTW, Linear Acoustic, TC Electronic, Minnetonka as well as Dolby presented their solutions in a highly informative and technical manner. Following the presentations the manufacturers representatives were available for individual questions.
Many thanks to Jeff Nelson and Ellis Reid of Dolby, as well as Joe Prout for organizing the event (pictured from left to right is Jeff Nelson of Dolby, and Joe Prout and Tim Finnegan of Dale Pro Audio).
And of course, thanks to Jim Starzynski for a terrific overview of the history of Loudness and CALM Act, as well as all of the vendors and their representatives that made the event so informative.

Focusrite RedNet
Rednet is Focusrite’s flagship range of Ethernet-networked studio interfaces, based around the tried and tested Dante Ethernet audio networking system from Australian company Audinate.
Focusrite’s RedNet is the first to offer IP network audio interfaces for the recording studio – or any application that requires moving high-quality audio around with ultra-low latency.
RedNet forms a scalable system that comprises high-quality, versatile interfaces that deliver traditional Focusrite quality sound and performance, with exceptional value for money. Fundamentally, RedNet is a near zero-latency audio distribution system. It is highly expandable; Audinate’s Dante technology enables a single link on the network to handle up to 512 channels (I/O) at 48kHz.
Every analog interface delivers dynamic range of 119dB, with 24-bit resolution at sample rates up to 192kHz. Each embodies the most advanced digital audio conversion designs available, including the latest A-D and D-A components, to provide exceptional quality. And with RedNet, you don’t need additional cabling and complexity to sync to a master clock: the system takes care of that automatically as rock steady clocking between units is carried over Ethernet with JetPLL™ for ultra-low-jitter.
How Does It Connect? - There are three methods of connecting the RedNet network to your computer: RedNet 5 (for Pro Tools HD, Pro Tools HDX and Pro Tools HD Native), the RedNet PCIe card (for ASIO and Core Audio applications) and directly into your computer’s Ethernet port with DVS or ‘Dante Virtual Soundcard’.
How Do I Control It? - RedNet Control is Focusrite's software interface for routing, controlling and configuring RedNet interfaces from a computer on the network. Typically running on the computer housing the RedNet host, RedNet Control provides a "drag and drop" interface for routing audio to and from RedNet PCIe, RedNet 5 and Dante Virtual Soundcard (DVS). This provides a fast, effective and simple method of routing audio as a complex matrix is not required. Simply drag a unit from the "Unrouted" section and it will be routed within moments.
Here is a video describing the RedNet's application at a university audio department in the UK:
Dale Pro Audio is proud to carry the RedNet system from Focusrite.

Exclusive Interview with Herbert Haun of MBHO Microphones

Dale Pro Audio is proud to be the USA's exclusive retailer and distributor for MBHO microphones. Dale Pro Audio Sales Professional Dan Ross recently interviewed MBHO founder Herbert Haun about his impressive career background, as well as the fascinating history and mission of the company. Read all about it here.
2013 marks the 20-year anniversary of MBHO, "Mikrofonbau Haun Obrigheim". Herbert Haun and Manfred Schneider founded the company in 1992 in Herbert's home in Obrigheim, Germany. MBHO features a unique staffing strategy, as it employs mainly 50+ year veterans of the German microphone industry that Herbert Haun met and worked alongside since his start in the industry in 1958 at Beyerdynamic.
Despite its comparably small size of 14 employees, MBHO not only manufacturers an extensive line of hand crafted microphones but also produces almost 90% of all microphone parts in-house. From the injection molded microphone clips to the gold sputtering of large diaphragm capsules, almost all parts are made and developed in house, resulting in the only microphones in the world that carry a "lifelong warranty".

Dale and RME - A Winning Combination for Digital Audio
RME is a German team of developers with a robust vision of creating innovative, user friendly, and high-quality digital audio solutions for less money. Their products can be found installed in studios, post production facilities, and broadcast houses all over the world.
The Fireface UCX ($1599) is a highly integrated pro audio solution in an ultra-compact format for studio and live recordings. It continues RME's long tradition of designing compact high-end interfaces, packing into a half-rack size unit what usually would be spread out over two or three 19 inch panels. In doing this the Fireface UCX marks a new packing record: 300 electronic components more than inside the already well-stocked Fireface UC! In a tremendous effort RME packed once again all the latest technologies, introduced with the award winning flagship UFX, plus a bunch of newly developed ones, into a half 19 inch housing with full mobile usability.
The Fireface 800 ($1799) is the world's most powerful FireWire audio interface ever. Up to 56 channels record/playback, up to 192 kHz sample rate, and true FireWire 800 sum up to an unsurpassed high-end, high performance and high speed FireWire audio interface. Since the Fireface first shipped in July 2004, the unit became the reference for FireWire audio - and still is today!
The Babyface ($749) is smooth on the outside for looks and feel, but inside has the latest 192 kHz AD- and DA-converters, two reference class microphone preamps, SteadyClock - analog circuit design, features and function are truly RME!
That includes the new TotalMix FX, a TotalMix on steroids, with tons of new features, improvements and 3-band parametric EQs, plus added echo and reverb: anything you need right out of the box and with near zero latency!
The Babyface uses RME's Hammerfall USB audio core from the Fireface UC - another milestone in low latency audio interfaces, and will give you outstanding performance and top sound in an ultra-portable, nicely designed and attractively shaped enclosure.
